You are not fertilized yet.

You do not know that you are pregnant during pregnancy week 1, however, your body is already well under way.
In preparation for your pregnancy, your body will have already begun to undergo changes such as a thickening cervix and a softened uterus. The hCG hormone that is released by the body is the same hormone that is used by home pregnancy test kits to ascertain the pregnancy. These levels will not be elevated enough inside the body yet to generate an accurate impression. If you deduce that you may be pregnant then you will either need to wait until the end of the second week to effectively use a home testing kit or see your GP for a blood test - this will ensure a 100% reading within the first week.

Some healthy tips to keep in mind in the first week are:
  • Avoid alcohol, drugs and tobacco products: These products if consumed can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, respiratory problems, low birth weight and other health problems.
  • Confide in your doctor and the other prescription and OTC drugs that you are taking: Your health care professional will be able to advise you if it is safe to continue taking these medicines or not.
  • Be diet-conscious: your diet should contain 400 micrograms of folic acid per day. This can prevent spinal and other kinds of defects in your baby. You should include a folic acid supplement to prevent health problems and give birth to a healthy baby.
During the second week of pregnancy your uterine lining that helps nourish the baby will start developing and your body will also start secreting follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). At the end of this week you will have almost completed your menstrual cycle and ovulation takes place (ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube). This is when conception takes place. So you actually conceive the baby only at the end of the second week.
Out of the 46 chromosomes that comprise the baby's genetic material only two- one from the sperm and another from the egg helps in determining the baby's sex. These are called the sex chromosomes. If the sperm that fertilizes the egg has an X chromosome then the baby will be a girl and if it is a Y chromosome it will be a baby boy.
You don't start feeling any changes in the body during the second week of pregnancy. After 14 days before the beginning of the next menstrual period the body ovulates. The ovary releases the ripened egg and the egg moves down the fallopian tube to meet with the sperm. Millions of sperm travel through the vagina, hundreds of them get into the fallopian tube but only one sperm succeeds in penetrating the egg when fertilization takes place.
You have to bear in mind that this stage will be followed by several regular check ups with the health care professionals often leading to a close relationship with the doctor whom you are consulting. Also you should be conscious to consume lot of protein rich foods and healthy foods rich in iron and calcium to be able to carry your baby to full term. Though your baby will start developing only from the beginning of the third week, and you may not experience any bodily changes as yet, you must be careful in your pregnancy diet and maintain your ideal weight in the second week to prevent complications later on.
Your baby starts developing during the third week though you may not feel any significant changes still. It is during the third week of pregnancy that the fertilized egg goes through the cell division process. About 30 hours after fertilization it divides into two cells, then four followed by eight cells and continues its cell division until it reaches the uterus. By the time it reaches the uterus it becomes a ball like structure called morula.
When the morula becomes hollow and gets filled with fluid it is called the blastocyst. This also happens during the third week of pregnancy only. This blastocyst gets attached to the endometrium which is the lining of the uterus. At the end of the third week the blastocyst gets attached to the endometrium. This process is called implantation. The endometrium will provide the essential nutrients to the developing embryo and help in removal of wastes. Over time this implantation site will develop into the placenta.
During this phase of pregnancy you must concentrate more on the pregnancy diet and intake of calcium, folic acid, protein and iron should be the maximum. This will prevent complications in the neural tube which is formed in early pregnancy itself. Protein helps in creating new tissue and hence this protein rich foods should be sufficiently consumed. A good dose of dairy products will help in the healthy development of teeth and bones. You should also consume lots of green leafy vegetables and legumes. Iron is essential to support the baby's increasing volume of blood supply. Green leafy vegetables, legumes and red meat are good sources of iron. All these steps will help in the healthy development of the fetus at this stage of pregnancy. You should visit your health care professional if you have any abnormal complaints like spotting or bleeding at this stage.
In the fourth week of pregnancy the embryo will have two layers of cells namely the epiblast and the hypoblast. These will develop into the baby's organs and body parts. The amnion and the yolk sac also get developed during the fourth week of pregnancy. The amnion is filled with amniotic fluid which will help protect the embryo by surrounding it. The yolk sac's function is to produce blood and nourish the embryo until the placenta takes over that role.
During the fourth week of pregnancy the baby gets further implanted into the endometrium. The hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin(HCG) is secreted by the baby which helps to maintain the lining of the uterus. The ovary is also signalled to stop releasing eggs which stops the menstrual cycle.
Complaints during this stage may include slight spotting or bleeding when the baby gets implanted properly. HCG hormone is generally measured during pregnancy tests. Symptoms of pregnancy like tingling or aching breasts, fatigue, nausea are normally experienced by women during the fourth week of pregnancy when the fetus starts growing. These symptoms augur the fact that your pregnancy is proceeding and you may consult a health care professional to rule out any abnormal complaints or issues at this stage.
A minimum weight gain is observed during this stage which is normal and healthy. Weight gain is also an indicator of your baby's growth and the extra weight gained is stored for breast feeding your baby after delivery. You should continue to take wholesome foods and dairy products that will aid the growth of the baby. Regular checkups with the doctor is also advised. The doctor will let you know if the tests are normal or if you have any other symptoms also you can get them cleared with the doctor.
Some distinct developments during the fifth week of pregnancy are a distinct shape the embryo begins to form at this stage. The neural tube which extends from the brain to the spinal cord also becomes fully developed in the embryo. A bulging portion in the middle of the embryo develops into the heart. It is during the fifth week of pregnancy that the placenta also develops and it is through its finger like projections called chorionic villi that an embryo receives nourishment from its mother.
Some women experience nausea at this stage. You might also suffer from other pregnancy symptoms like fatigue, tingling and aching breasts and vomiting. You might also experience breast soreness or headaches. There is nothing to worry if you do not have any of these pregnancy symptoms during the fifth week but you should consult your doctor if any of them symptoms suddenly disappear. You should also stay clear of certain types of foods in this stage of pregnancy to prevent food poisoning and miscarriage. They are:
  • Soft cheeses like brie, camembert and blue cheese
  • Raw or undercooked meats
  • Unpasteurized juices or milk
  • Raw eggs or foods containing raw eggs
  • Raw shell fish
  • Pate
Some types of food borne illnesses can spread from these food types so you should be cautious while eating them or eliminate these foods from your diet.
During the fifth week of pregnancy a trans-vaginal ultrasound will show about 90% of yolk sacs. Neural folds of the baby will also begin to fuse. You can differentiate between head and tail of the baby at the fifth week of pregnancy. The heart of the baby will also start beating from this week!
Pregnancy diet during the fifth week should include calcium, folic acid supplements, protein and dairy products like in any other stage. Periodic health checkups will also be useful if you have any queries regarding the development of fetus.
At the sixth week of pregnancy your baby's brain and nervous system will be rapidly developing. Optic vesicles which develop into eyes form on either side of the head and also the passages for the inner ear. An ultrasound examination will allow you to listen to your baby's heart beat around this stage of pregnancy. The respiratory and digestive systems also begin to develop during the sixth week of pregnancy. Arms and legs also start to grow. Your baby starts to show recognizable physical features and is protected by the amniotic sac.
As the baby's legs are curled up against the torso for most part of the pregnancy it is difficult to measure from head to toe, so crown to rump measurement is undertaken and a full length measurement is impossible. Women may experience many pregnancy complaints this week like morning sickness, tender aching breasts, fatigue, heart burn etc. Hormonal changes and frequent urination might also be experienced during the sixth week of pregnancy. Bloated feeling and retention of water may be the other complaints at this stage.
If prenatal vitamins cause increased churning sensation you can have them with food or consult a health care professional about its stoppage. You'll also be asked to undergo blood and urine tests to avoid health issues. Your sugar levels will also be tested and urinary infection if any will be checked for. Your blood will also be screened for the Rh factor. RH refers to a protein which can be positive or negative depending on its content. Pap smear, weight and blood pressure checkups and vaginal inspection are also a part of your routine check up at the sixth week. The first ultrasound may also be conducted which might be internal. You can also know your ideal weight and other details during this stage from the online sites related to pregnancy and child birth.
By the seventh week of pregnancy the umbilical cord is formed and the baby is growing rapidly within the uterus. The umbilical cord connects you and your baby throughout the pregnancy, providing oxygen and other nourishment and removing wastes from the baby. The baby's digestive tract and lungs also develop further at the seventh week of pregnancy.
The features of the baby like its eyes, nose and ears become more defined during this stage. The arm buds develop further and hands develop at this stage. There may be many changes in your body. The bay at this stage has reflexes so will move rapidly. The thorax and abdomen are entirely formed and lungs begin its slow development. The head becomes more prominent and leans towards the body. The ears and the vestibular membrane develop rapidly. The baby can open its mouth during the seventh week and you can see the development of the baby's fingers.
You might experience complaints such as sickness which manifests as nausea in the evenings also. You can just try to alter your eating habits by eating smaller amounts of food at frequent intervals or at night. If complaints persist you can consult a health care professional though it is absolutely normal to experience morning or evening sickness more profoundly at this stage. You may also experience sciatic nerve pain during the seventh week; this is not a cause for concern and is caused by the expanding uterus. You can try low impact exercises like pelvic exercises or walking to keep yourself in good shape. The pregnancy diet should be continued and should be wholesome as advised by the health care professional.
Fingers and toes begin to develop during the eighth week of pregnancy. The baby can also flex its arms at the elbow and wrists. Eyes develop pigmentation and become more obvious. The baby's intestine also tends to get longer and protrude into the umbilical cord till week twelve of pregnancy. The baby's genitals also take shape but you would not be able to determine the sex of the baby at this stage of pregnancy.
The formation of all organs is almost complete during the eighth week of pregnancy. The digestive juices start flowing and the kidneys start functioning well at this stage. Forty muscle sets start operating in conjunction with the nervous system. The cartilage also begins to change to bone cells during the eighth week. There are about 140-150 fluttering heart beats per minute in the baby. The eyelids are forming at this stage and eyes look open.
Pregnancy complaints at this stage include a bloated feeling, expanding waist line and heartburn. You should wear loose fitting clothes and should eat small frequent mild instead of over stuffing yourself. You can take an antacid if your heartburn is interfering with your eating pattern. Some of you might be advised to undertake your first pre natal visit which involves a thorough check up by a health care professional. Your height, weight, BP will be checked for and also a physical examination will be conducted. Several lab tests that include blood tests, cervical test and urine test may also be a part of the health check procedure. You can get your queries answered by a health care professional and also visit some of the pregnancy related websites to get your doubts clarified during the eighth week of pregnancy.
The baby becomes a fetus from an embryo at the ninth week of pregnancy. The baby measures about 13 and 17 millimeters from crown to rump. The baby during ninth week of pregnancy has developed fingers which are still webbed. The eyelids and toes begin to form and the tip of the nose becomes visible. Spontaneous movement of the baby is possible at this stage of pregnancy.
Many women experience spotting at this stage, but if you notice unusual bleeding you must consult a health care professional. They will also experience heartburn and indigestion because of the changes in hormone levels. Eating smaller meals and avoiding lying down immediately after consuming a meal will bring some relief. Drinking a glass of milk will provide natural relief.
Higher progesterone and estrogen levels in women will cause the mucus membrane to swell in pregnant women at this stage. This may sometimes lead to nasal bleed or congestion. Using a vaporizer will control the symptoms to a certain extent. Morning sickness is also at its peak during the ninth week of pregnancy. Pregnant women may also experience lack of sexual desire due to hormonal changes which is normal. Some pregnant women also may face the symptom of gingivitis or inflammation of gums, so good oral care is also essential. Pregnancy symptoms at this stage include slight morning sickness, fatigue, tenderness in breasts and frequent urination. Constipation is also a common symptom but laxatives are not advised. Eating a high fibre diet and drinking lots of water combined with exercise will prevent further health problems. Iron supplements can also cause constipation but you should not stop using them without consulting a health care professional. Many women also experience headaches at the tenth week of pregnancy but intake of aspirin or ibuprofen are not recommended. Relaxation techniques and applying a balm to sooth your headache or other natural remedies can be undertaken.
It is also important to understand that a pregnant woman requires twice the calcium intake than a normal woman. Not taking enough calcium supplements might lead the baby to take its requirements from you and will lead to osteoporosis later on in your life. Even soy milk, cheese products and non fat yoghurt will help you get the calcium you need during the ninth week of pregnancy. You can also consider calcium fortified foods like orange juice, cereal, bread etc. You can make use of the information available online to understand your ideal weight at this stage and all about the baby's development and movement. If you experience any unusual symptom you should not hesitate to consult a health care professional.

Your baby will be 1-2 inches in length and weighs approximately 8 grams. The most vital internal organs are fully formed at this stage and start functioning. Ossification centers in the skull will develop and will get more solid. The intestines begin to move into the abdominal cavity at this stage.
Weight gain during this stage is necessary and a healthy symptom of pregnancy. Some of you may experience an improved complexion due to improved blood flow and changes in the hormone levels. Tiny hair appears on the baby's upper lip and eyebrows and it starts making creeping and climbing noises. The placenta during the thirteenth week of pregnancy is fully functional and provides the baby with the essential oxygen, nutrients, minerals and fats. This process may seem weird, but is entirely natural. Almost every pregnant woman will experience similar things at this stage.
Since labor is only weeks away, it is a good idea to get a balance of exercise along with relaxation. Exercise, even late in pregnancy has been known to greatly benefit the pushing process during labor. So taking a nice stroll, each day can do a lot of good. You'll be strengthening, those all too important leg muscles.
Relaxation comes in handy for the delivery process, as well. Pregnant women who get the right amount of rest are also helped by simply relaxing. Having a habit of napping when you're tired, allows you to not only refresh yourself, but also stockpile energy. It's no secret that labor is especially demanding and should be prepared for the best way you can. Listening to your body is important.
Get as much rest as you can!
Women across the world, who are 37 weeks pregnant, have begun making preparations for delivery. Planning for their babies to arrive is in the forefront of their minds. The natural process of getting things in order, for the newest arrival to the family has taken a center stage. At this time though, mother and child are continuing to develop and change as the big day gets closer. If you are 37 weeks pregnant, you will notice some new occurrences in your own body. Each woman will experience pregnancy differently, but a number of things are common to this period. At this time your cervix will begin to soften as your body prepares for the process of labor. You may have even felt some contractions.
Braxton Hicks contractions usually precede the real contractions. These are natural painful pangs that women at this stage experience. Women, who are 37 weeks pregnant, need to familiarize themselves with this stage of pregnancy. Since many things will change quickly, it's important to know what to expect.
Some of the signs that pregnancy is near are things like spotting or even the breaking of water. Being aware of your body's changes could be especially crucial now. Spotting, although not unusual, must be monitored. If it becomes extreme, quickly inform your doctor. And if a woman's water breaks, she could potentially have only hours before her baby's arrival. Getting to the hospital could be paramount.
Women, who are 37 weeks pregnant, are carrying babies who have changed a lot in this trimester. The baby is now able to practice sucking, turning, and breathing, all while inside the womb. This unborn child has officially reached the milestone of being a full term baby. He or she could be anywhere near 6.5 pounds.
If you are 38 weeks pregnant, you are truly coming to the end of your third trimester. It is possible to go into labor any day now, and anticipation is probably high. Moms are now experiencing even more sensitivity in their breasts, which may have begun to leak. Purchasing bra pads can help if this is the case.
Some expectant mothers who are 38 weeks pregnant even begin to dilate early. A mucus plug, that has been blocking the cervix, will now start to thin. Once it is completely worn away, it is followed by the breaking of water. This is a time to be particularly watchful at each visit to the bathroom.
Those women who are 38 weeks pregnant will find that they are having contractions periodically. This is another area of alert, since false labor is sometimes the case. Women need to time these contractions just to be sure they aren't the real thing.
Babies at this phase of pregnancy could be as long as 19 - 20 inches. Their intestines have begun to fill with their first bowel movement post delivery. As anxious as the mother is to get done with the process, so too is her little one. Patience is the key now, since there's not much longer to go!
Expectant mothers, who are 39 or 40 weeks pregnant, have officially reached the end of the line. Although labor may not have begun, they have experienced one of the longest of life's journeys. These women are close to their due dates, and are anticipating the arrival of their little one, finally. Many women, who are 39 weeks pregnant, only want to make it to their due date. Unfortunately, only about 10% of women actually give birth on that fated due date. There's no formula where this is concerned. Your baby will come soon! It must be noted, however, that some pregnancies last longer than expected.
At 39 weeks pregnant, first time moms often experience at least one or two false alarms. They are absolutely certain that this is it. But after a visit to their friendly hospital, they find that it's definitely not time. This can be a good sign though, that the time is almost here.
Women, who are at least 39 weeks pregnant, will find that their baby has greatly increased in size. He or she is approximately somewhere near seven pounds. Each baby's weight will vary, but most fall into this range. Now, not only is your baby's skin color changing, but it is also taking on a much plumper appearance.
A look at your baby now would show that its head and abdomen are nearing the same size. Another important change in this little one, relates to its immune system. Through the help of the placenta, your baby's body has started growing its own antibodies. These are going to be crucial not only now, but later on in life.
One thing that women 39 weeks pregnant and 40 weeks pregnant, have is common is their enthusiastic joy about this phase. These women have been through a lot, and nothing would mean more to them than to hold this child they've carried for so long. These feeling and desires get stronger with each passing day.
At 40 weeks pregnant, a woman will find that her little one may now be somewhere between seven and eight pounds. Some women, however, will deliver babies that are a pound or a few ounces smaller. The only concern is that the baby is developed and healthy. And if the baby is healthy, the weight doesn't matter too much.
Nearly all of the development necessary to deliver a healthy baby has already taken place right in the womb. Your baby has grown and strengthened at an alarming rate, and is just waiting to show the world. Its bones have arranged themselves into the proper positions. Babies are generally born with about 300 bones, some of which will connect with others, since adults have 206 bones.
Waiting may be the most difficult task, next to labor itself. Expecting moms are biting their nails, as they impatiently wait for their little boy or girl to arrive. This is a really good time to not only reflect on all you've experienced, but to make a game plan for after delivery. Making lists of supplies and necessities can take a lot of stress out of the next few weeks.
Many expectant mothers will go passed the typical 40 weeks of pregnancy. In fact, first time pregnancies often go one or two weeks over. So, if you are 41 or 42 weeks pregnant, don't give up. You will soon hold your little one in your arms, and this will all be a faded memory. Women who are 41 weeks pregnant are often experiencing a certain amount of stress and anxiety. They have followed all the rules, kept themselves healthy, and endured morning sickness. Now where's the baby? He or she is tucked inside, still in the preparation mode.
If you are 41 weeks pregnant, you may have started looking for ways to rush this labor along. There are many folk's tale remedies, said to send a pregnant woman into labor. Some of those include: eating spicy foods, exercise, and sex. Women have attributed their subsequent labor pains with doing some of these. But it's uncertain whether or not they actually work.
One thing that is certain, for a woman who is 41 weeks pregnant, her baby is continuing to grow and gain weight. She and her baby have officially entered into the fourth trimester of pregnancy. To be honest, almost no woman wants to be in this situation. But sometimes this is the case, and it's better to face it than to take on stress about it.
Women, who are now 42 weeks pregnant, are even more miserable than those who are 41 weeks pregnant. They are feeling heavy, bloated and just plain uncomfortable. Many women, who reach this particular stage, are plagued with fatigue and even swollen feet. There is one good thing about making it this far though.
Almost no physician will allow a pregnancy to go beyond this point. So if it hasn't come up yet, the topic of induction is on the horizon. You aren't alone in this process if you are 42 weeks pregnant. At least 10% of pregnant women go 2 weeks past the 40.
Your baby is still putting on weight, and most are somewhere between eight and nine pounds. He or she is about twenty-one inches now. There are some issues that occur particularly when a baby is in the womb this long. Many of them have either peeling skin or rashes. These can be addressed after birth, and typically go away.
A look at your baby now would show its plumpness and even the growth of longer finger nails and hair. Many babies born at this stage, come out with a head full of hair, just like mommy's or daddy's. In more ways than one, it's time for this little one to come out!

Until that big day comes, however, there are a few things expectant mothers can occupy themselves with. One of them is packing your baby bag. The baby bag, will have everything you, or your baby will need while at the hospital. Women commonly pack comfort items like night gowns or fuzzy slippers. Keep this bag near the door, or in your car. So, when your fast exit occurs, all you'll have to do is grab it and leave.
Stay positive at this point. Within a matter of days, you'll be holding your beautiful blessing!
Your child was born!
